Any Excuse to Visit NY

In a recent post I noted the Guggenheim Museum’s 50th anniversary and the extensive Kandinsky exhibit created in its honor. It all looked so cool on the museum’s website and I couldn’t stop thinking about catching the tail end of autumn in Manhattan. Throwing care to the wind, I booked a trip. Four glorious days … away from work, my computer, and Seattle’s rainy season.

The Guggenheim’s recently restored facade is lovely and the exhibit is nothing short of amazing. Wright’s celebrated design, floors spiraling up and up, walls covered with Kandinsky’s lifelong work…. It is the perfect pairing of architecture and art.

The Met and MoMA followed, providing further artful joy. And, in between, Central Park. Whether sizzling with summer heat or crackling with winter frost, it is my idea of perfection. And fall? Stunning. I missed the lushest time of changing leaves but plenty remained, combined with newly naked branches. Up before dawn, toting camera bag and tripod, I explored as much of the park as I could within each morning’s window of precious light. And I salute the dog walkers. They are dedicated; they are legion; and I melted in the presence of a clear yet undocumented puppy epidemic.

Here are a few images of my most favorite place in the world.

Old Car City

Here’s a cool little place in Georgia that I hadn’t heard of until recently – Old Car City. A couple of months ago I joined a group of photographers that was visiting the site. Yes I know… it took me this long to blog about it but hey, I got a little busy ;) This is not the sort of thing I usually shoot so I was excited about the challenge.

When I got there I immediately noticed the abundance of mosquitoes. Thank goodness someone else had the sense to bring insect repellent. So needless to say, they immediately became my best friend. haha. It quickly was made known that we were to watch out for snakes and ground-level bee nests – another detail I wasn’t aware of but I guess given the condition of the cars, it’s to be expected. I did mention this isn’t my regular sort of photo shoot didn’t I? The best way to avoid snakes, other than just not shooting there, was to not disturb the cars. Meaning, that if a car hood was closed you don’t want to open it and shake what’s in it ;)

We spend several hours there just soaking in the gobs of textures available. They had some really cool muscle cars in their original shells including the Mustang my dad once owned. Here are just a few shots from the day.

Guggenheim’s 50th Anniversary

Mark your calendar: October 21, 2009. The Guggenheim Museum is opening its doors with free admission to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the exact day the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building opened to the public. An extensive Kandinsky exhibit is on display through January 13, 2010 (click on the link and watch the video – it’s wonderful). The best part? Well, my favorite part. At dusk on the 21st, the Empire State Building will be lit up in red in honor of the museum’s anniversary. Nicely done, NY.
