For the past two years I have had the pleasure of photographing hair events at 7 Salon in downtown Seattle. Whether educational classes for artistic teams, in-salon events, fashion shows, or creative celebrations at local clubs, my documentation has always occurred as the hair and makeup are being done and without benefit of special lighting or staged photo sessions. Models have run the gamut from professionals to salon clients to friends of stylists.

At each event I’m amazed by the final look of the hairstyles — always colorful, dramatic, outrageous, glamorous, or indefinably chic. But what I truly love is observing the process. Most people don’t realize that hair (and makeup) done at a high level of artistry can take hours to complete. And it is within the space of this vast expanse of time that poetic moments exist and, if I’m lucky, are held in the stillness of a photograph.
